Cherry Blossom Hotel - Washington, D.C.

If your planning on visiting the nation's capital for the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival, you need to read this article.  Over my career in hotel management, I have worked for several brands in several locations.  Among these hotels, I have managed two hotels in Washington, D.C. and I can tell you from first hand experience, it is expensive!  And I don't mean just the room rates, but all of the other little things that add up when your on vacation.  Parking in the city is extremely expensive, ranging from $25-$40 per night, gas is usually $0.30 more expensive per gallon.  D.C. hotels are geared towards government travelers, therefore rates usually start at government per diem which is $211 per night.  WOW!!!  Ok, so by now you are wondering what's the point?  Traveling to Washington, D.C. can be done without depleting your savings account.  The key is to find a hotel outside of the District but close enough to a Metro Station, with a shuttle and free parking. The answer is the Sheraton Rockville Hotel.  This Sheraton is only 4 years old, and it is the new prototype hotel geared for the leisure traveler since we are located less than 1 mile from the Shady Grove Metro Station.  The hotel comes fully equipped with indoor heated pool, state of the art fitness facility, full service restaurant, room service and bar, internet, washer/dryer, gift shop and the biggest rooms this side of the beltway.  Book Online now by clicking Cherry Blossom Hotel, this site will take you to amazing specials, offers, and packages.  If you have any questions about large groups or tours - please don't hesitate to reach out to me.  My phone number is (240) 912-8200 and email address is mpatnaik@sheratonrockville.com

I look forward to hosting you, your family and friends this year for the 2011 Annual Cherry Blossom Festival March 26 - April 10, 2011.  Here are a list of website that will help you navigate throughout the city once you have booked your rooms with us:

While having Luch

While having lunch with my co-workers at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Saddle River, New Jersey, I received a phone call from the area manager. Much to my amazement, he was offering me a position as Operations Manager at a brand new Sheraton in Rockville, MD. Having no idea where Rockville was nor having ever worked for a Starwood property, I was excited by the challenge of something new and, the best part…I GOT TO LEAVE NEW JERSEY!!!! I hang my head in shame as I admit that the Garden State was not for me.

I packed my belongings and moved south, starting my new life in the Maryland area. Once settled into my new home at the hotel, I began pouring over the information booklet that was place on the coffee table, hoping to learn as much as I could about Rockville. The first fact that jumped out at me was Montgomery County was established by the Maryland Constitutional Convention on September 6, 1776, which was exactly 2 centuries, to the day, prior to my birth. I always find it fascinating to learn important historical events that happened on the date of my birthday. After reading the article, and learning of this coincidence, I had an overwhelming feeling that I am finally home.

Life in Rockville, Maryland, has been everything I wanted. I have the perfect job, the perfect community and the perfect boyfriend. I realize being so close to the shopping at the Galleria in Northern Virginia, the history of Washington, DC and the quiet farms and hills of Western Maryland, one can have the best of all worlds.

Rockville offers history, beauty. shopping and nightlife, all virtually at your doorstep. From the historical Glen Echo Park, first established in 1891; the American Film Institute which now resides at the Art Deco Silver Theater; to the gorgeous cascading rapids of Great Falls park. There are more than 200 restaurants in the neighboring Bethesda area offering a melting pot of ethnic food from Hindu, Greek, Spanish, Turkish…the list is endless.

A quick hop on the metro can transport you to some of the world’s most famous historical sites…the White House; the Capital and of course, the Washington National Zoo and the Smithsonian Museum. The best part is, most of these icons are free to the public. If you have had enough history and culture and want something else, Georgetown is just a stone’s throw away. Here you’ll find trendy stores; 5-star restaurants and some of the best people watching you will ever experience.

If you want to stay close to home, Rockville has lots to offer as well. The Rockville Town Center offers shopping and dining at small independent restaurants and boutique style shops. Of course, what must be on your “must do” list is visitng our King Farm Grill where we infuse upscale dining, drinks and fun. You do not want to miss our unsurpassable happy hour (5pm – 8pm daily) including appetizers and specialty drinks . Introduce yourself to Sergio, our singing bartender who can engage all his guests in jokes and conversation. Our girls, Sheereen and Kathy are not only gorgeous, but will keep a smile on your face with their wit and friendly personalities. Give us a try and I promise you will feel at home with your new Sheraton Rockville family.

Bike to Work Day in Rockville, MD.

The City of Rockville promotes bicycle commuting through Bicycle to Work Day and its Commuter Assistance Program. Most Rockville residents live within bicycling distance of Town Center and other workplaces in the City. The City’s neighborhoods are also accessible to three Metrorail stations (Rockville, Shady Grove, and Twinbrook) and several Metro Bus and Montgomery County Ride-On Bus routes (both transit systems have bike-on-bus racks). People who bicycle longer distances can access the Rock Creek Trail just east of the City and ride the trail to downtown Washington, DC. Therefore, the City of Rockville is in a great position to serve bicycle commuters.

Bicycle to Work Day

Event Details

The City of Rockville will again be participating in the regional celebration of Bike to Work Day on May 21, 2010. Last year, over 6,000 cyclists registered for the event region-wide.

This year, Rockville will have two "pit stops;" one at Rockville Town Square in the pavilion in front of the new library (north of the East Middle Lane and Maryland Avenue intersection), and the other at the Fallsgrove Transit Center, near the intersection of Fallsgrove Drive and Oak Knoll Terrace. The pit stops will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. for bike commuters to stop by for breakfast, coffee, prizes, a free t-shirt, and to meet other local cyclists.

During the event, the City of Rockville will be raffling prizes every 15 minutes. The City will also recognize several of Rockville's most notable bike commuters.

If you would like to register for the event, assuring that a t-shirt will be waiting for you at the registered "pit stop," please visit the Washington Area Bicyclist Association's Bike to Work Day website.

Nominate a Co-worker for the Rockville Bicycle Commuter of the Year Award

If you would like to nominate a friend or coworker for the Rockville Bike Commuter Award please send the person’s name and contact information to rtorma@rockvillemd.gov along with a short description of their bike commuting habits.

Commuter Assistance Program

The City of Rockville promotes bicycle commuting through its Commuter Assistance Program. Employers are encouraged to provide information to employees about commute options, such as bicycling and walking, public transportation, telecommuting, and carpooling. Some employers offer incentives to employees who do not drive alone to work. These incentives include providing free or reduced-price transit passes, paying for new walking shoes, or paying for bicycle repairs.

Rockville has also established a PARC-IT Program to encourage employees to use alternative transportation, which can help reduce traffic congestion, the environmental impacts of driving alone, and the demand for automobile parking. PARC-IT includes programs that provide emergency rides home, discount public transit fares, and general transit information.

Benefits of Biking to Work

For Employees:

Less expensive than driving

Great way to get exercise

Energizes you on way to work and lets you wind down on the way home

Reduces pollution and congestion

For Employers:

Reduces health care costs

Increases employee productivity

Reduces parking costs

Decreases employee turnover

Happy Mother's Day!!

One the best way to celebrate Mother’s day is to give your mom the day off. Let her take it easy and relax while the rest of the family does the work.

Many families begin the Mother’s day in breakfast in bed. Usually Dad and the Kids will let mom sleep late as they go into the kitchen and prepare her favorite meal. A Mother's Day breakfast can consist of anything after the food is cooked arrange everything nicely on a tray. Don't forget the vase with a single flower. With spring here, the children can pick a tulip or daffodil from the garden outside.

When everything is ready carefully carry the tray and mom's favorite sections from the newspaper up to her bedroom. Cards and small presents from the children can be placed on the tray before it is presented to mom in bed.

Many Families make a special Mother's Day dinner or take mom out to her favorite restaurant for a meal. It is a good day to let your mom relax and let her see what a wonderful family she has.
